Frequently Asked Questions About In-Home Physiotherapy

Have questions about physiotherapy at home? HTS Home Therapy Services provides mobile physiotherapy throughout Winnipeg and surrounding communities. Our physiotherapists come directly to you, making it easier to access personalized assessment, treatment and rehabilitation in the comfort of your own home.

Below are answers to some of the most common questions about our in-home physiotherapy services.

What is in-home physiotherapy?

In-home physiotherapy brings the physiotherapist directly to you rather than requiring you to travel to a clinic. Your physiotherapist can complete an assessment, develop an individualized treatment plan and provide rehabilitation in the comfort of your own home.

Home-based physiotherapy can be especially helpful for people recovering from surgery or hospitalization, seniors, individuals with mobility challenges, people with neurological conditions, or anyone who simply prefers the convenience of receiving physiotherapy at home.

Do physiotherapists come directly to my home in Winnipeg?

Yes. HTS Home Therapy Services provides mobile physiotherapy, meaning our physiotherapists travel directly to clients throughout Winnipeg and surrounding communities such as Oak Bluff, Oakbank, Headingley, Portage la Prairie, St. Francis Xavier and La Salle. Our mobile physiotherapists travel to clients' homes, allowing people to receive individualized physiotherapy without travelling to a traditional clinic. Availability may vary depending on your location and the physiotherapist serving your area. Contact us to confirm whether service is currently available in your community.

Receiving physiotherapy at home also allows your physiotherapist to see how you move within your everyday environment and tailor exercises and recommendations to your home, lifestyle and personal goals.

Do I need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist in Manitoba?

No. A physician's referral is not required to receive physiotherapy services in Manitoba.

Does insurance cover in-home physiotherapy?

Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for physiotherapy services, including physiotherapy delivered in the home.

Coverage varies depending on your individual plan. Physiotherapy services may be covered through providers and programs such as Manitoba Blue Cross, Sunlife, Canada Life, Greenshield, Veterans Affairs Canada, Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) and other extended health benefit plans.

We recommend checking with your insurance provider to determine the amount of physiotherapy coverage available under your plan.

Do you offer direct billing for physiotherapy?

Direct billing is available through many insurance plans.

Eligibility for direct billing depends on your individual insurer and benefit plan. Please contact us if you would like to determine whether direct billing may be available for your physiotherapy appointments.

How much does in-home physiotherapy cost?

The cost of home physiotherapy depends on the type of service and appointment required.

Contact HTS Home Therapy Services for current rates and information about insurance coverage or direct billing. Physiotherapy expenses may also qualify as eligible medical expenses for income tax purposes.

What happens during my first home physiotherapy appointment?

Your first appointment typically begins with a physiotherapy assessment. Your physiotherapist will discuss your health history, current concerns, mobility, pain, function and the activities you would like to improve.

Depending on your needs, the assessment may include strength, balance, range of motion, mobility and functional testing. Your physiotherapist will then work with you to establish appropriate goals and develop an individualized treatment and exercise plan.

Because the assessment takes place in your home, your physiotherapist can also consider your everyday environment when making recommendations.

What conditions can in-home physiotherapy help with?

Our physiotherapists work with a wide variety of orthopaedic, neurological and mobility-related conditions.

These may include arthritis, back pain, chronic pain, fractures, sports injuries, balance disorders, osteoporosis, joint replacements, post-surgical rehabilitation and recovery following hospitalization.

We also work with individuals living with neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury and other conditions affecting strength, balance, mobility and independence.

Treatment is individualized according to each client's needs, abilities and goals.

Do you provide physiotherapy for seniors at home?

Yes. In-home physiotherapy for seniors is an important part of our practice.

Our physiotherapists can help older adults improve strength, balance, mobility and confidence while working toward maintaining independence at home.

Home physiotherapy may be particularly helpful for seniors experiencing reduced mobility, frailty, arthritis, balance difficulties, falls, neurological conditions, chronic pain or a decline in function following illness or hospitalization.

Can physiotherapy help prevent falls and improve balance?

Yes. Physiotherapy can help identify factors that may contribute to falls and balance difficulties.

Treatment may include balance exercises, strengthening, mobility training, walking practice and recommendations designed to improve safety and confidence with everyday activities.

Because treatment occurs in your home, your physiotherapist can also consider the environment in which you regularly walk and perform daily activities.

Do you provide physiotherapy after surgery or a joint replacement?

Yes. Our physiotherapists provide home-based rehabilitation following surgery, including hip and knee replacements and other orthopaedic procedures. Eligible Manitobans recovering from elective total knee replacement or total hip replacement surgery can receive publicly funded post-operative physiotherapy at home through HTS.

Treatment may focus on restoring range of motion, strength, walking ability, balance and function while helping you safely progress toward your individual recovery goals.

Receiving physiotherapy at home can be particularly convenient during the early stages of recovery when travelling to a clinic may be difficult.

Can you provide physiotherapy after a hospital stay?

Yes. We regularly work with individuals who have experienced a decline in strength, mobility or independence following hospitalization, illness or surgery.

A physiotherapist can assess your current abilities and develop a rehabilitation program focused on rebuilding strength, improving walking and balance, and helping you safely return to everyday activities.

Do you provide neurological physiotherapy at home?

Yes. Our physiotherapists work with individuals living with a variety of neurological conditions, including stroke, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury and other conditions affecting movement and mobility.

Treatment is tailored to the individual and may focus on strength, balance, walking, transfers, coordination, mobility and maintaining or improving independence with everyday activities.

Do you provide physiotherapy for motor vehicle accident injuries through MPI?

Yes. HTS Home Therapy Services works with individuals recovering from injuries related to motor vehicle accidents and Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) claims.

Physiotherapy may help with pain, mobility, strength and returning to normal activities following an accident. Contact us to discuss your situation and the information required for your MPI claim.

Do you provide physiotherapy for children?

Yes. HTS Home Therapy Services provides physiotherapy services for children in the comfort of their home.

Our physiotherapists can assess a child's individual needs and develop treatment and exercise strategies designed around their abilities, development and goals.

Is home physiotherapy only for people who have difficulty leaving their home?

No. Although home physiotherapy is especially convenient for people with mobility limitations or difficulty travelling to a clinic, it can be appropriate for many different people.

Some clients choose home physiotherapy because of convenience, while others benefit from receiving treatment and exercises in the same environment where they perform their everyday activities.

Do you offer virtual physiotherapy or Tele Rehab?

Yes. HTS Home Therapy Services offers secure video physiotherapy appointments through our Tele Rehab service.

Virtual physiotherapy may be appropriate when an in-person visit is not necessary or practical. Your physiotherapist can provide assessment, education, exercise instruction and follow-up remotely when appropriate.
